About Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (1886-1947)

Demetre Haralamb Chiparus was born on September 16, 1886 in Dorohoi, Romania, and died on January 22, 1947 in Paris. Chiparus was a renowned Art Deco sculptor and ceramicist and was considered one of the most important artists of this style at the time. His works of art were mainly created between 1914 and 1933.

In 1909, Chiparus moved to Italy to study under the sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912, he went to Paris, where he honed his skills at the École des Beaux-Arts under Antonin Mercié and Jean Boucher. Chiparus perfected the chryselephantine technique, which combines bronze and ivory, and he often decorated the bronze elements by cold painting or enameling.

Enamelling is a process in which an inorganic mass, usually consisting of silicates and oxides, is melted. This mass is applied in one or more layers to a substrate, such as metal or glass, and melted at high temperatures to produce a smooth coating.

Chiparus' works are characterized by their elegant, detailed depictions of dancers and figures from the Art Deco period.

care instructions

Use a soft cloth or brush. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents as these can damage the patina. For a deeper cleaning, a mild soap solution can be used. To maintain the protective layer, it is recommended to occasionally treat the figure with a special wax for bronze. Do not store or place bronze figures in damp environments as this can encourage corrosion.
