Barye

Barye

Antoine-Louis Barye (24 September 1795 – 27 June 1875) was an important French sculptor. After the Russian campaign in 1812, he joined the army before working as a chaser in 1814 and later as a modeler for François Joseph Bosio. From 1831 onwards he became known for his animal studies, including a tiger fighting a crocodile. His most famous works include the bronze of a lion, the relief of the lion on the July Column and the eccentric equestrian statue of Napoleon for Ajaccio. Barye was also active in etching and watercolor painting and is considered a pioneer of realism.
